WtPB 56 - Lost Season 4 Episodes 1-3

Sarah joins The Lost Boys(Dylan, Derek and Jon) to talk about the beginning of season 4 of Lost. This episode we talk about The Beginning of the End, Confirmed Dead and The Economist.

The Beginning of the End is a very appropriate title for the first episode of season 4. In terms of seasons, it marks the midway point in the series and the larger plot starts to reveal itself. On the Island, we see the Losties divided on whether or not to trust the Freighter people. Off the Island Hurley struggles with his mental health, as he has what he thinks are hallucinations of his dead friends telling him he has to return to the Island which are actually ghosts.

We return to the cabin briefly in this episode, as Hurley stumbles upon it. Inside the Cabin Hurley sees Jack's dad Christian wearing a black suit and tennis shoes before Jacob's eye appears in the window. I(Dylan) wanted to draw attention to this for 2 reasons. First, this factors into a theory I intend to flesh out more later this season and second, I don't think it's a coincidence that Hurley runs into Jacob in the same episode it's revealed Hurley sees ghosts off the Island.

Then we get into Confirmed Dead, which focuses on introducing us to the Science Team from the Freighter. On the Island, our Losties now split into two factions, search for the Science Team as they arrive on the Island after ditching from their helicopter. Off the Island, we're introduced to the science team one member at a time, the same order we see them arrive on the Island.

First, we meet Daniel. Daniel is a physicist and is probably the second least threatening character on the show after Hurley. Then we meet Miles, who isn't a scientist. But rather he has an odd psychic which is ill defined but basically he can hear "echos" of the dead, which before being recruited, he used the way Sawyer would, to con people. Then we meet Charlotte, who is a cultural anthropologist with an as yet unknown connection to the Island. Our introduction sees her visiting an archeological site in Tunisia where a polar bear skeleton was found which happens to be wearing a collar with the Hydra logo on it. Then we're introduced to one of the best characters on the show, Frank Lapidus. Frank, like Miles, isn't a scientist. He has no psychic abilities. He's just a pilot, but he's the coolest pilot that's ever lived.

To finish off the episode, we're shown Naomi speaking with a man who visited Hurley at Santa Rosa who claimed to work for Oceanic. It's revealed that he does not in fact work for Oceanic, but for the same mysterious benefactor who hired Naomi and the freighter folk.

Next we have The Economist. Which is Sayid centric. On the Island, Locke and those following him tries to visit the cabin, only to find that it isn't where John and Ben first found it, from there they carry on to the Barracks. As Locke believes it's their best option to hide and protect themselves from the freighter crew.

Jack's group on the other hand are preparing to get off the Island. Sayid offers to retrieve Charlotte from Locke's group in exchange for a seat on the helicopter for it's first return to the freighter. Daniel performs an experiment which has troubling results, which we'll get into more in episode 5, The Constant.

In the flash forwards, we see Sayid has apparently become an assassin after leaving the Island. This episode focuses on a specific subject named Elsa, who works for the titular "economist." This Economist is Sayid's true target, but he needs to use Elsa to gain access to this extremely secretive character.

Let's not waste any more time and get into this.
