WtPB 50 - Sarah's Teenage Goth Years - The Craft and The Crow

For our big 50th episode Dylan and Derek take a trip back in time with Sarah as we talk about 2 movies that spoke to her goth soul during her formative years. This is likely to become a recurring theme, but in this one we specifically focus on The Craft(1996) and The Crow(1994).

We start with The Craft. Starring Robin Tunney, after having just completed filming for Empire Records. But the advertising might lead one to believe Fairuza Balk is the lead. Though to be fair, Fairuza stands out among the cast. There's a unique quality about her that draws the audiences attention. We also have Neve Campbell, who later that year would see her career take off with the release of Scream. And rounding out the cast with Rachel True, who I know primarily from her role as Mary Jane in the stoner comedy Half Baked. In terms of supporting cast, there aren't too many big names, though this is the first big role for Skeet Ulrich, who like Neve, would go on to star in Scream.

The movie is essentially about how power corrupts, especially when ones motives are selfish or vengeful.

From there, we move on to The Crow. A genuine 90s classic, featuring the final performance of Brandon Lee. Who turns in an incredible performance as Eric Draven. He would have had an amazing career ahead of him had it not been for the horrible on-set accident that took his life. Ernie Hudson plays a beat cop who is apparently one of the few cops in the city with a heart. The actress who plays Sarah didn't work much after this, but I feel like it's more to do with what happened to Brandon than her ability as an actor, because she's excellent in this.

The movie opens with Eric and his fiance Shelly being murdered by a gang of thugs. Eric is DOA, but Shelly is taken to the hospital where doctors try for 30 hours to save her life. Shelly's last words are for Eric(who she does not know is already dead) to look after a local kid who they unofficially adopted, named Sarah. We then flashforward a year and Eric returns from the grave with the help of The Crow. But this is no normal crow. Rather it's some sort of supernatural entity that drags Eric's spirit back to Earth so he can avenge what was done to himself and Shelly.

Well let's get on with it, shall we?
