This episode Derek is back to talk with Sarah and Dylan about one of Bill Paxton's feature film directorial debut and one of his best films, Frailty. Fair warning, we get into spoilers almost immediately, so do yourself a favor and watch the movie first. It's full of twists and turns and you really owe it to yourself to see it unspoiled. So I will do my damnedest to avoid spoilers in this post.
We started with a short segment where we talk about what Dylan thinks is Bill's strangest movie, The Dark Backward. Neither Sarah nor Derek had seen it and the trailer doesn't do a great job of explaining the plot. But essentially, Judd Nelson is a terrible comedian who can't get a laugh to save his life. The only person who seems to support his dream of being a stand up comedian is Bill's character. Judd can't catch a break, that is until a third arm grows out of the middle of his back. Suddenly finding himself with a gimmick, he starts to gain popularity while Bill rides his coattails. Check out the trailer here:
After a short Podern Family promo break, we launch right into our Frailty discussion. As mentioned above, we get into spoilers almost immediately. But the movie also takes us into discussions about religion and faith, as both are central themes in the film. The basic plot revolves around Paxton's character, who believes he's been chosen by God to destroy demons and how that affects his family unit. I can't really say too much more without getting into major spoiler territory, so we'll stop there.
After a second promo break, we briefly discuss Bill's other work and somehow end up talking about this years Academy Award for Makeup.
Frailty is an absolutely great hidden gem of a film. My only guess on why it didn't do well and is still not very well known, is that it's an incredibly hard movie to market.
