WtPB 40 - Matt Stone and Trey Parker

This week Sarah, Dylan and Derek talk about the early movies of Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creative minds behind South Park. Starting with their student film, Cannibal: The Musical then Orgazmo and finally Baseketball.

Cannibal: The Musical is the mostly true story of Alfred Packer and his ill-fated journey from Utah to Colorado. It's not as dark as you might think considering it's about cannibalism. It's actually a very well made student film considering they had so much left to learn about film making. The songs are quite good with a dash of humor, and the movie features one of the most entertaining commentary tracks I've ever heard.

From there we talked about Orgazmo, which fits into an odd place in Matt and Trey's history. It was filmed after they made the pilot for South Park, but before anyone outside of executives had actually seen the show. But it was released shortly after South Park began airing. So it was often listed as "From the makers of South Park" even though they had only made the Spirit of Christmas by the time Orgazmo was shot.

The plot centers around a young Mormon named Joseph Young who is doing his mission work while trying to save up enough money for he and his fiance to get married at the Salt Lake Temple. In order to do that he gets involved in a movie called Orgazmo. A porn about a super hero who has a device that can make people spontaneously orgasm, and ultimately ends up becoming Orgazmo in his real life.

Then we talked about their last movie before South Park blew up to become the cultural phenomena we all know today, Baseketball. While Matt and Trey don't appear to have much creative input into the movie, they put in excellent performances as does Dian Bachar, a friend of the duo since college who Matt and Trey often say is the best actor in their movies. It's a funny movie, but it's clearly not what the two normally turn out. Which we talk about briefly in the episode.

Let's not make you do anymore reading, shall we? Here's this weeks episode:

As always we encourage you to check these movies out if you haven't already and\or buy them from Amazon. But even if you don't get one of these movies, anything you buy after following these links will help us out.
