WtPB 34 - Tom Hanks

This week, Sarah, Derek and Dylan talked about 3 Tom Hanks movies from the late 80s. Yes, we had to be that specific, as all 3 movies we talked about were released over a 2 year span. Big, The Burbs and Turner and Hooch.

We started off with Turner and Hooch. Which is basically a buddy cop movie were one of the cops is a dog. Hooch is the only witness to his masters murder, so Turner ends up taking the dog in. Hilarity ensues as Turner who is a very neat and orderly person deals with this messy and destructive dog.

We then went on to talk about Big. A movie about a 13 year old boy named Josh, making a wish to be "big" to a demonic looking coin operated fortune teller type arcade machine. His wish is granted, but rather than simply making Josh taller, it ages him to around 30. The rest of the movie centers around Josh's struggling to deal with adult life.

While it's a very lite move in general, the movie does touch on some darker themes, including statutory rape, kidnapping and loneliness. But it does so in a way that keeps the tone very lite.

Lastly, we discussed The Burbs. Which is easily one of Sarah and Dylan's favorite Tom Hanks movies. The basic story revolves around 3 guys becoming suspicious that their new neighbors might be murderers. So they set about trying to prove it by any means possible.

They're all really fun movies that have some dark undertones but still manage to stay lite and funny. In no small part thanks to the genius that is Tom Hanks. I don't think any of these movies would have turned out the way they did without his performance. So let's not waste any more time, shall we? Let's get this show on the road.
