I don't have any specific comment I would like to address with my first post. What I am going to do is explain why the fundamentalist Christian characters are in the movie, and why their beliefs seem to come under attack, briefly.
Now, the movie is not anti-Christian as many seem to think on IMDb. Rather it's anti-creationism, or rather anti-anti-Evolution. Obviously the fact that alien life exists elsewhere in the universe and is intelligent challenges their religious view that God created man in his image.
So, the interaction between this alien character and a fundamentalist Christian comes to a head when Paul reveals that his people have evolved the ability to communicate directly to another beings mind. Not only that, but it appears that Paul's race has perfect genetic memory, meaning they appear to retain the memories of their ancestors. Paul passes on the memories of the evolution of his species to Ruth, proving to her that her previously held belief that evolution is wrong was itself wrong.
What the movie is making fun of isn't Christianity as a whole, but rather the (hopefully) small number who believe the bible is word for word infallible fact, and absolutely refuse to accept any evidence to the contrary. If you're a Christian who believes so strongly in creationism that you're offended when the idea is mocked, why did you go see a movie about aliens anyway? Considering the fact that aliens exist in the movie mocks the idea of creationism in and of itself.
And so concludes this, the first of a potentially infinite number of rants I will no doubt go on.
