WtPB 32 - Alan Rickman

Recently we lost a great character actor in Alan Rickman, so Derek, Sarah and Dylan decided to do a few of our favorite comedies featuring the man. The movies were chose were Dogma, Galaxy Quest and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

We started with Dogma. Kevin Smith's fourth feature film and one of my personal favorites. In Dogma, Rickman plays Metatron. The Angel responsible for communicating with humanity for God, since God's voice is so awesomely powerful that even a whisper could easily kill a person. This movie also features my personal favorite depiction of God, portrayed by Alanis Morissette.

From there we discussed Galaxy Quest. Probably the best Star Trek film that doesn't actually exist in the Star Trek canon. In it, Rickman plays a hybrid character who seems to be a cross between Worf and Spock, who hates that the only role he's known for is from this TV show he worked on 20 years ago.

The movie is absolutely hilarious. In no small part thanks to Rickman. But credit where credit is due, Sam Rockwell and Tony Shalhoub kill it in this movie. Really from top to bottom, the cast it spectacular. If you're a Star Trek fan but have yet to see Galaxy Quest, do yourself a favor and check it out ASAP.

To close out our mini Rickman-thon we talked about Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. This time only his voice is featured, but I cannot imagine anyone else voicing Marvin the chronically depressed robot.

Rickman was incredibly gifted as an actor. His deep monotone voice was able to convey depths of emotion that many actors can't replicate by using every tool at their disposal. We're all worse off for his loss, but at least he left us with some great films and those whose lives he touched, he touched deeply. Sarah reads two letters from such people in Kevin Smith and Daniel Radcliffe.

On that note, here's the episode and when you're done, go watch these  movies and explore the rest of this great actors catalog.

As always we encourage you to head over to Amazon and pick up the movies we discussed this episode:
