Episode 11 - Apocalypse Films EP1.

This week our hosts discuss three movies that are similar in subject but vastly different in almost every other way. Spoilers ahead, so be warned.

We start the show discussing The Book of Eli, which if you have not seen it, there will be major spoilers regarding the ending. This is one of those movies where you owe it to yourself to watch at least once not knowing how it ends, as the ending makes you rethink everything you've seen along the way. At it's base this movie is about a man traveling across the country carrying what is apparently the worlds last remaining Bible. But it's also much more than that. It's a beautifully filmed, if not somewhat bleek, movie that does an excellent job of laying clues regarding the ending without ever actually saying it outright.

We manage to make a really tenuous link to Sean Connery based on this film as well. The trend continues.

Next we talked about Hell Comes to Frogtown. Which is the epitome of a b-movie but is incredibly entertaining if you enjoy these types of films. The movie centers around a man called Sam Hellman, who goes by Hell for short and is played by none other than Rowdy Roddy Piper. And personally(Dylan), I feel like without the Rowdy one, this movie would not work. The movie has a slightly complicated setup. Sam Hellman is one of the few remaining fertile men left. When his virility is discovered he's forced to become an agent of the government and is immediately sent into the field to Frogtown to rescue 5 fertile women who have been taken hostage by the mutated denizens of Frogtown, and more specifically their leader, Commander Toty.

Lastly we discussed a movie that I personally(Dylan) absolutely love, A Boy and His Dog. The idea behind this movie is very similar to Hell Comes to Frogtown. Vic, played by a very young Don Johnson, and his canine companion, Blood, explore the wasteland of the post apocalyptic future in search of food and women(both are a scarce commodity in the world of the film). The two are able to communicate telepathically, which leads to some genuinely and intentionally funny moments.

Similar to Hell Comes to Frogtown, Vic is eventually recruited to be a breeder. Only in this case, for a secretive group of people who live in something very similar to the Vaults from the Fallout video game universe, to add his genetic material to their society.

Like Book of Eli, you owe it to yourself to see this film before you listen to this weeks show. We discuss the ending, which doesn't really contain a twist, but it's still quite unexpected place for a movie to go. It's one of those movies that critics and sci-fi fans loved, but never really found an audience and thus has been sort of lost to the ages.

As always we encourage you listeners out there to use our Amazon links at the bottom of the page to buy the movies we discussed. Or anything else for that matter.

But without further ado, episode 11.
