The Source, The Smoke Monster, the Protector and the Sideways experience

So with this entry I plan to establish a connection between the Smoke Monster and Jacob as well as connect them both to the Source and my belief that the sideways experience takes place within the Source. (This article assumes anyone reading is already familiar with Lost)

To begin, let's go back roughly 2,000 years to when Jacob and MIB were both normal humans. Mother explained that the Source is "the source" of all life, death and rebirth. She also explained that if one were to enter the cavern they would suffer a fate worse than death. We'll get back to this shortly.

Now, MIB from a very young age expressed an interest in leaving the Island, a desire which only grew as he aged. This desire ultimately ends up driving a wedge between himself, Jacob and Mother, resulting in MIB leaving Mother and Jacob to live with a group of people who had become stranded on the Island.

Eventually these people help MIB find a way to use water in combination with the Source energy to move a person from the Island to somewhere off the Island. When Mother finds out about this, she knocks MIB out and when he wakes up everyone in the village is dead and has been burnt.

I personally find it unlikely that Mother killed all of these people herself. Not to mention the well where MIB's method of escape was located was completely filled in. What is my solution to this apparently super powerful Mother issue? I believe she had the help of a friend, a friend who was also a giant pillar of black smoke. Not MIB, but a precursor to MIB. However unlike MIB, I think this smoke monster was not ideologically opposed to Mother.

I'm reminded of a carving which we see in the chamber where Ben is judged by the smoke monster in season 5. We see what is assumed to be a representation of the smoke monster on the left, while on the right there is a depiction of Anubis who appears to be summoning the smoke monster. This leads me to believe that even before MIB became the smoke monster we see throughout the series, there were others. Perhaps even a different smoke monster for each Protector throughout the history of the Island.

There are no real solid facts that point to this absolutely being true, but it seems to fit, and ties into the job I believe Hurley was offering Walt in the epilogue. But before we get into that, let's go back to the idea that the Source is the source of all life, death and rebirth and how that relates to the sideways experience in addition to exploring the whispers and why ghosts seem to be drawn to the Island.

Now, it's my belief that the entire sideways experience takes place "within" the Source. I think this is where all spirits(with notable exceptions which we will get into later) go eventually after death. And I believe the fact that the final scene takes place in a Church which also contained a portion of the Source energy in reality hints at this. What happens to them after they walk through the Church doors is unknown, but I think when Mother mentions "rebirth" she's hinting at reincarnation.

This would be the death and rebirth part of Mothers description, and in a way addresses the life aspect. Life and death are a cycle kept going by rebirth after ones awakening in the sideways.

Now, let's get back to those notable exceptions(which make up the whispers), like Michael. It's often speculated that Michael didn't deserve this "punishment", but I don't think it has anything to do with what he deserves. I think he's unwittingly punishing himself by holding onto the guilt over what he did to get Walt and himself off of the Island. In other words, the universe isn't holding him back from experiencing the sideways, he's holding himself back by holding onto his weakness. I think this is true of most of the ghosts seen on Lost(except Christian but that's a whole other thing).

Now to the job I believe Hurley was offering Walt. I'll just get right to it and suggest that Hurley wants Walt to be the new smoke monster. Why Walt? Well, let me first establish what I believe the smoke monsters "purpose" is on the Island.

I think Danielle may have been more right than we thought when she said the smoke monster was a security system. But, I don't think it's protecting the Island, rather I think it's meant to determine who is worthy of being on the Island or in a way judges their ability to accept the things about themselves that they don't like. Sort of evaluating their ability to "move on" before they actually die.

But at least with MIB, the punishment for failure is death. Eko refused to acknowledge his obvious guilt over his part in his brothers death and as such is punsihed. Ben on the other hand admits his guilt and his willingness to atone or move beyond it.

So why Walt for this job? Well, he does have psychic abilities. He's able to read peoples thoughts by touching them. Who better to judge a persons ability to let go of something than someone who can read said persons mind? Further, Walt may have the ability to see ghosts as Hurley does. Allowing him to potentially help people trapped by their own regret.

I'm sure I'm leaving something out, but I think this about covers the basics. I will edit later as questions are asked and my idea evolves.
